Please, never put your tufted rug in a washing machine. The yarns of a tufted rug are secured with a special latex adhesive on the back. The hot water and spinning motion of a washing machine will break down this glue, ruin the shape of your rug, and cause the yarn to fall out entirely.
1. Proper Vacuuming Technique
Avoid the Beater Bar
The rotating brush heads (beater bars) on standard vacuums can pull out the yarns of a tufted rug or cause the surface to fuzz excessively. Instead:
- Use a flat, brushless suction attachment.
- Run the vacuum on medium suction power, not the highest setting.
- Vacuum with gentle, sweeping motions without pressing too hard into the rug.
2. Emergency: I Spilled Something!
Don't panic. If you act quickly and correctly, the stain won't be permanent. Here is your step-by-step rescue plan:
Blot, Do Not Rub
Scrubbing the stain back and forth with a cloth will only push it deeper into the fibers. Instead, use a paper towel or clean cloth to press and lift (blot) the spill to absorb the liquid.
Warm Water and Mild Soap

4. My Rug is Shedding, is That Normal?
Don't Worry, It's Part of the Process
It is completely normal for newly purchased tufted rugs (especially acrylic and wool) to experience some "shedding" or fluffing in the first few weeks. If you see small tufts or pills on the surface, do not pull them out with your hands; gently snip them off with scissors.
