The best part of tufting is that it knows no boundaries. Your creation doesn't have to be just a floor rug; it can be a modern piece of art that changes your room's acoustics, adds texture, and turns your walls into a gallery.
However, tufted rugs are heavy, and gravity is unforgiving. We’ve compiled 4 professional methods to hang your artwork without ruining its shape, damaging your walls, or risking a fall.
This is the most practical method for small and medium-sized pieces. It involves sewing metal D-rings directly to the back of the rug (onto the backing).
Sew the rings slightly lower, not at the very top edge, so they stay completely hidden from the front.
If your rug is large or rectangular, this is the sturdiest method to prevent the top edge from curling inward or sagging.
- A thin wooden slat is glued to the back of the rug.
- A fabric strip is placed over the slat, creating a secure "sandwich".
- It hangs perfectly flush and straight on the wall.
Alternative Methods
If you don't want to drill holes or if you are renting, you can use heavy-duty hook-and-loop fasteners like Command Strips.
- Sew or glue the soft side to the rug.
- Stick the rigid side to the wall.
This involves stretching the rug over a wooden canvas frame. It adds depth to the piece and makes it look like a traditional painting.
*You must staple the extra edge allowance to the back of the frame without trimming it.
Which Method Should You Choose?
| Method | Best For | Difficulty | Wall Damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| D-Rings | Small / Round / Organic | 🟢 Easy | Low (Nails/Screws) |
| Wooden Slats | Large / Heavy / Rectangular | 🔴 Hard | Medium (Anchors Req.) |
| Velcro Strips | Lightweight Rugs | 🟢 Easy | None |
| Canvas Stretch | Painting-like Pieces | 🟡 Medium | Low (Nails) |
The biggest issue with wall-hanging tufted rugs is the bottom corners curling up over time. To prevent this, before applying the final backing, you can insert heavy metal washers or thin metal rods into the bottom corners. The extra weight pulls the rug down and keeps it completely flat.
