You want your tufted rug, whether lovingly handcrafted or purchased with care, to retain its vibrancy from day one. However, handmade rugs are much more delicate than factory-made products. The type of yarn used and the latex adhesive on the backing directly determine the cleaning method.
At GG Tufting, we explain professional ways to remove stains and clean your rug properly without causing damage.
1 Daily Maintenance: The Vacuum Rule
The biggest enemy of tufted rugs is dust settling between the fibers. However, not every vacuum cleaner is tufting-friendly. The wrong attachment can unravel your hard work.
2 Emergency: Stain Removal Protocol
Acting immediately prevents the stain from setting into the fibers. Never scrub! Here are 3 life-saving steps:
Press down on the spill with a paper towel as soon as it happens. Never rub back and forth; this spreads the stain.
Harsh chemicals (like bleach) will ruin the yarn color. Use clear dish soap or baby shampoo.
For stubborn stains, mix 1/3 white vinegar with 2/3 water. Wipe gently with a damp cloth.
CRITICAL WARNING: NO MACHINE WASH!
The Latex Adhesive used on the back of tufted rugs will break down under the heat and tumbling action of a washing machine. A machine-washed rug will come out as a pile of loose yarn with melted glue.
