Just as canvas is crucial to a painter, fabric is essential to a tufting artist. However, tufting cloth is vastly different from regular cotton sheets or curtains. It is engineered to withstand a machine that punches dozens of times per second.
It usually becomes invisible, completely covered by yarn once the rug is finished, but it is the skeleton that determines the quality, durability, and form of the rug. At GG Tufting, we want you to get to know this special material, the cornerstone of our production.
1. What is Primary Tufting Cloth?
Technical Features
Tufting cloth is a specialized weave made of 100% polyester or a polyester-cotton blend, possessing industrial-grade durability.
- Yellow Lines: The fabric features yellow guide lines every 2 inches (5 cm). This prevents the design from becoming distorted.
- Flexible Structure: It expands when the needle enters and closes the hole to grip the yarn when it exits.
- Tear-Resistance: It is resistant to high tension and the repetitive impact of the machine.
2. Two Distinct Roles: Primary vs. Secondary
Two separate layers of fabric are used in the tufting process, each with a different function.
Role: To be the canvas. It is the main carrier where the yarn is punched and the design is drawn. This is the fabric stretched on the frame.
Role: Protection and aesthetics. It is the lining fabric (felt or non-slip base) glued on after the rug is finished to cover the messy yarn back and latex.
3. Why Not Use Burlap or Regular Cotton?
The tufting gun is a powerful tool. Choosing the wrong fabric will result in your hard work tearing apart.
| Fabric Type | Suitability | Why? |
|---|---|---|
| Tufting Cloth (Grey/White) | PERFECT | Fibers are flexible, grip the needle, won't tear, and have guide lines. |
| Monks Cloth | RISKY | Suitable for Punch Needle (hand tool), but may shred under the speed of an electric gun. |
| Burlap (Jute) | NO | Very brittle. The needle breaks the fibers upon entry, and the rug sheds over time. |
| Calico / Cotton Canvas | NEVER | The weave is too tight. The needle punctures (tears) the fabric instead of sliding through; there is no recovery. |
4. The Skeleton of a Quality Rug
Advantages of Proper Tufting Cloth
When you hold a rug, check the back. If it is neatly covered with a lining (Backing Cloth) and the edges are finished with binding tape, you can be sure the internal skeleton (Primary Cloth) is also high quality. Quality is hidden in the details.
The Foundation Must Be Strong
Tufting cloth is the unseen hero of a rug. No matter how beautiful the design, if the fabric is poor quality, the rug will lose its shape over time.
