When it comes to rug cleaning, we all share the same nightmare scenario: pulling a sweater out of the machine only to find it has shrunk to doll size. The worry, "Will the same happen to my rug?" is very common, especially for handcrafted tufted pieces.
Let's give you the good news right away: No, acrylic yarn does not shrink like natural wool. However, this doesn't mean it can be washed at any temperature. at GG Tufting, we have compiled the tricks to cleaning your rug while preserving its chemistry and form.
1. The Science: Wool vs. Acrylic
Shrinkage is primarily caused by the structure of the fibers. Why does wool shrink while acrylic doesn't?
Why Does It Shrink? Wool fibers are covered in microscopic scales, like fish scales. With hot water and agitation, these scales open up and lock together (felting). Result: The rug shrinks and hardens.
Why Doesn't It Shrink? Acrylic is a smooth synthetic derivative. It has no scales to lock together. It does not swell or change dimensions when in contact with water. It maintains its size when washed.
2. It's Not the Water, It's the Heat!
The "Melting" Effect
Acrylic doesn't shrink in water, but it melts and deforms under high heat. If you wash your acrylic rug in very hot water or put it in a tumble dryer, the fibers will "shrivel." This isn't technically shrinkage, but the plastic losing its form. Once deformed, there is no turning back.
3. Can I Put It in the Washing Machine?
Acrylic yarn is durable enough for machine washing, HOWEVER, the latex backing of tufted rugs may not withstand the intense spin cycle and hot water of a washing machine for long periods. If the glue breaks down over time, the yarn may shed. Therefore, except for small bath mats, we do not recommend washing large rugs in a machine.
4. Shrinkage Risk Table
| Material | Cold Water Shrinkage | Hot Water Shrinkage | Tumble Dryer |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100% Acrylic | None | Deforms (Melts) | NEVER |
| Wool | Risky | Definitely Shrinks | NEVER |
| Cotton | Minimal | Shrinks | Shrinks |
| Polyester | None | Low Risk | Low Heat Only |
The Golden Rule for Longevity
Don't be afraid of your acrylic rug shrinking, but protect it from heat. The safest cleaning method is professional rug cleaning or spot cleaning with a soapy cloth.
At GG Tufting, we use top-tier acrylic yarns and strong latex adhesives that are highly resistant to water and cleaning. With the right care, you can keep your rug's form and softness just like the first day for years to come.
