Tax Exemption Guide: Selling Hand-Tufted Rugs from Home

Would you like to gain financial freedom while practicing your art? Tufted rug weaving has become one of the most popular home-based crafts today. However, many artists are afraid to turn their hobby into a business because they are intimidated by official processes like "company setup costs" or "tax tracking."

We have good news: According to Turkey's Income Tax Law No. 193, it is possible to benefit from a tax exemption when selling products you craft with your own labor at home. Here is the step-by-step tax exemption guide for home-based tufting artists.

📜 1. The Home-Based Production Exemption

Under the law, individuals who do sewing, embroidery, and weaving (including tufting) at home can benefit from the tradesperson exemption. Thanks to this status, your obligation to issue corporate invoices, keep accounting books, or file VAT returns is completely eliminated.

🏠

Location Requirement

Production must take place in the home where you legally reside. Renting a separate shop, storefront, or workshop invalidates this exemption.

👩🔧

Labor Requirement

No outside workers or employees can be hired for production. However, receiving help from a spouse, friends, or family members does not violate this rule.

⚙️

Machinery Requirement

Production should be done using tools that support manual labor (like a handheld tufting gun), rather than industrial, mass-production factory machines.

📝 2. Step-by-Step Application Process

1
Online Tax Office: Submit an online application using the "Petition for Those Requesting a Tradesperson Tax Exemption Certificate."
2
Inspection Process: Tax office officials will visit your home to verify that you are actually making tufted rugs and meet all the necessary conditions.
3
Certificate Issuance: Upon approval, your "Tradesperson Tax Exemption Certificate" will be issued. This document is valid for 3 years.
4
Commercial Account: You must open a special "Commercial Collection Account" at a local bank and receive all your sales income exclusively through this channel.

💰 3. Earnings Limits and Deductions

Although this tax exemption generally means "not paying taxes," there is an annual earnings limit set by the government, along with a tiny automatic deduction handled by your bank:

  • Annual Limit: As long as you do not exceed the annual revenue limit set for 2026 (always remember to check the current limits), your tax-exempt status continues.
  • Automatic Withholding Tax (Stopaj): Only 4% (or 2% depending on specific conditions) of the funds entering your commercial bank account is automatically transferred to the government by the bank. You do not need to file any complicated tax returns.

Crucial Point to Note

If you plan to sell on major online marketplaces (like Amazon, Etsy, or local platforms like Trendyol), they usually require you to be a fully registered company. However, for sales made directly through your own website or social media channels, you can seamlessly use payment gateways with just your Tradesperson Exemption Certificate.

4. Why Should You Get This Exemption?

Selling off-the-record always carries risks. The main advantages of acquiring an exemption certificate include:

  • Legal Security: You can easily account for your earnings and avoid any legal tracking or penalties.
  • Shipping Discounts: Since you possess an official document, you can sign corporate agreements with shipping companies, allowing you to send a standard $3.00 (approx. 100 TL) package at much cheaper rates.
  • Trust: Letting your customers know that you are a registered, tax-exempt tradesperson projects a highly professional brand image.
